This article reviews the importance of, issues to be considered in the purchase of, and available options for police uniforms. A police uniform is the essence of the image presented by the patrol officer.
Abstract
Uniforms should be selected in accordance with the image the department wishes to convey and the duties to be performed by officers. Uniform features may vary to enhance the particular duties performed by an officer class; for example, traffic-control officers, mounted patrol, motorcycle patrol, and bicycle patrol should have different uniforms based on their transportation mode and duty requirements. Maintenance is another consideration. A good- quality uniform should be easily maintained in accordance with manufacturer instructions on the best way to care for the fabric. This article has major sections that discuss the needs to be met by and the features offered by manufacturers for various types of police uniform clothing. Specific types of uniform clothing discussed are outerwear (jackets and coats), shoes, belts, hats/caps, and badges/shields.
