This book presents a step-by-step procedure for detecting, investigating, and preventing employee theft, including fraud and malingering in workers' compensation cases.
Abstract
The introduction notes that at each link in the chain from manufacturer to consumer, internal theft losses are compounded and passed along in a large, invisible, and inflationary "theft tax." Suggestions for detecting employee theft focus on inventory shortages or variances, evidence or other symptoms found during facility inspections, and information received from informants. Aspects of the investigation of employee theft cover the use of inside and outside undercover agents, "tailing" and stationary surveillance, and supplementary investigative methods. Guidance for the use of inside undercover agents covers the selection of the person for the job, supervision and coaching of the agent, and the agent's communication with the business' management. Instruction in the use of outside undercover agents addresses infiltration, making the "buy," and "shopping" investigations. Instruction in surveillance pertains to vehicle surveillance, "foot tails," and stationary surveillance. Chapters on the arrest and closing the investigation feature preparation for the arrest; interrogations, confessions, and evidence recoveries; and the role of the polygraph and disposition of offenders. Other chapters focus on recovery procedures, prevention, and the investigation of suspected fraud and malingering in workers' compensation cases. Appended forms, subject index, 12-item selected bibliography.
