This manual provides guidelines for California health care and correctional personnel regarding how to protect themselves from HIV infection both on and off the job.
Abstract
The guidelines explain the nature and transmission of AIDS and the precautionary measures to be used by medical and nonmedical personnel. They also explain HIV antibody testing, the diagnosis and treatment of HIV disease, and AIDS prevention measures to be used by employees who have significant exposure to blood and body fluids. Instructions are given for searches, the handling of evidence, procedures to use in assaults, and precautions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The use of protective gear, the handling of contaminated equipment and supplies, housekeeping and disinfection, the handling of infectious waste, and universal precautions are all outlined.
