PART II OF A FIVE-PART SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL COURSE ON EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVING SKILLS, DIRECTED PRIMARILY TO MARYLAND POLICE OFFICERS, FOCUSES ON SPECIFIC DRIVING TECHNIQUES.
Abstract
IT OPENS WITH AN OUTLINE OF THE SKILLS NEEDED BY ALL DRIVERS, FOLLOWED BY A DISCUSSION OF SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS (KNOWLEDGE OF LEGAL REQUIREMENTS AND OF VEHICLES, ABILITY TO DEAL WITH ALL ABNORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, AND WILLINGNESS TO SERVE AS AN EXAMPLE OF COURTESY AND GOOD DRIVING HABITS). HAZARDS THAT MAY BE ENCOUNTERED BY EMERGENCY VEHICLE DRIVERS ARE DESCRIBED, INCLUDING THOSE RELATING TO THE VEHICLE ITSELF, TO THE CONDITION OF THE ROADWAY, AND TO VEHICULAR AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC. GUIDELINES FOR AVOIDING TUNNEL VISION AND FOR IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL HAZARDS BEFORE THEY DEVELOP ARE OFFERED, AND DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAINTAINING THE PROPER FOLLOWING DISTANCE UNDER A VARIETY OF CIRCUMSTANCES ARE PRESENTED AND ILLUSTRATED. AN ANSWER-KEYED QUIZ ACCOMPANIES EACH SECTION. A PRETEST/POSTTEST COVERING ALL OF PART II IS ALSO PROVIDED. FOR PARTS I AND III-V, SEE NCJ 67969 AND 67971-73.
