EVALUATION OF CHANGES IN SOCIAL ADAPTATION AND SEXUAL ADJUSTMENT OF ADULT MALE SEX OFFENDERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN GROUP THERAPY DISCUSSIONS.
Abstract
TWO GROUPS OF 12 SUBJECTS EACH WERE GIVEN PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS BEFORE AND AFTER AN EXPERIMENTAL PERIOD OF EIGHTY GROUP THERAPY SESSIONS. IT WAS DEMONSTRATED THAT GROUP THERAPY WITH A SELECTED GROUP OF SEX OFFENDERS DID PROMOTE CERTAIN POSITIVE CHANGES IN THE AREAS OF SOCIAL ADAPTATION AND SEXUAL ADJUSTMENT. THE CHANGES WERE ESPECIALLY MARKED IN THE AREA OF SOCIAL ADAPTATION WHILE THERE WAS LACK OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT IN THE AREA OF SEXUAL ADJUSTMENT IN A PRISON SETTING. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT AREAS IN WHICH POSITIVE CHANGES OCCURRED WERE THE ABILITY TO DEAL WITH REALITY, COPE WITH AGGRESSION, EXERCISE EMOTIONAL CONTROL, AND ADAPT SOCIALLY OVERALL. NEGATIVE CHANGES WERE DEMONSTRATED IN THE ABILITY TO CONFORM. ALSO, YOUNGER MEMBERS IMPROVED TO A GREATER DEGREE THAN THE OLDER MEMBERS OF THE GROUP. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES SAMPLES OF THE RESPONSES TO THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST USED IN THE STUDY. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
