MANAGEMENT TOPICS RELEVANT TO THE POLICE ARE EXAMINED IN THIS COMPACT BRITISH HANDBOOK, DESIGNED AS A SUPPLEMENT TO THE MANAGEMENT PHASE OF A SERGEANTS' TRAINING COURSE.
Abstract
TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE PSYCHOLOGY, COMMUNICATION, LEADERSHIP, MOTIVATION, MORALE, ASSESSMENT AND APPRAISAL, INSTRUCTION, AND ON-THE-JOB TRAINING. THE QUESTION OF WHY PEOPLE REACT AS THEY DO IS BASIC TO THE SUBJECT OF MANAGEMENT; PEOPLE'S ACTIONS ARE GOVERNED BY THE WAY IN WHICH THEY PERCEIVE, THEIR ABILITY TO ACQUIRE AND RETAIN KNOWLEDGE, THEIR BACKGROUNDS, AND THEIR NEEDS. THESE FUNDAMENTAL ISSUES ARE EXAMINED IN AN EFFORT TO UNDERSTAND DAILY POLICE PROBLEMS, SUCH AS THE CONFUSION OF WITNESSES AND THE INCOMPATIBILITY OF SOME OFFICERS AS WORKING PARTNERS. THE ROLE OF THE POLICE SUPERVISOR IN THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS IS DISCUSSED, INCLUDING A DEFINITION OF THE PROCESS, WRITTEN AND ORAL COMMUNICATION, AND BARRIERS TO EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION. LEADERSHIP IN THE POLICE FORCE IS EXAMINED, ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE LEADERSHIP QUALITIES, SELECTION OF LEADERS, AND TYPES OF LEADERSHIP. THE FORCES, DESIRES, AND NEEDS THAT MOTIVATE PEOPLE TO ACTION ARE REVIEWED, AS WELL AS THE CONCEPTS PUT FORTH BY A. H. MASLOW, DOUGLAS MCGREGOR, AND FREDERICK HERZBERG. CAUSES OF LOW MORALE AND FRUSTRATION, THE PURPOSES OF ASSESSMENT AND APPRAISAL, INSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES, AND THE VALUE OF EXPERIENCE ARE EXAMINED. FIGURES, FOOTNOTES, A SUGGESTED READING LIST, AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED. (PRG)
