A 1984 seminar brought researchers, government officials, and others from several European countries together to examine the meaning of rationality in criminal justice as well as procedural and evidentiary needs and alternatives to traditional criminal justice processes.
Abstract
The seminar also considered European counterparts to diversion and the challenge that recent technological developments bring to the criminal justice process. Individual papers focused on the meanings of rational actions and rational decisions, the criteria for rationality in the drafting and application of laws, and the central role of information in criminal justice decisionmaking. They also considered assumptions used in criminal justice decisionmaking, limits to rationality, and conflicts among different levels of the criminal justice system. Research and reform proposals were also discussed. Figure
