Abstract
The first chapter discusses reasons to choose corrections as a career. Other general issues related to correctional careers covered here include professional conduct and ethics, work attitudes, career enhancement and promotion, wellness as a lifestyle choice for correctional officers, and staff substance abuse. Separate chapters discuss the stress on correctional officers and their families, the ambiguity of the correctional officer's role, and styles of control and supervision. Some work situations unique to correctional officers include supervising minority inmates, dealing with hostage situations, supervising special needs inmates, and coping with litigation.
