Abstract
FIFTY RESIDENTS OF THE IOWA WOMEN'S REFORMATORY WITH NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN AGE, IQ, EDUCATION, OR LENGTH OF INCARCERATION PARTICIPATED IN THE STUDY. THIRTY WERE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED TO THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP AND THE OTHERS TO THE CONTROL GROUP. THOSE IN THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP WERE GIVEN 24 HOURS OF DISCUSSIONS, FILMS, AND GAMES SELECTED TO EMPHASIZE 12 FACTORS PRESUMED TO BE EFFECTIVE IN THE TRAINING OF ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION. TRAINING FOR SUBJECTS IN THE CONTROL GROUP CONSISTED OF 19 HOURS OF DISCUSSIONS, FILMS, AND GAMES WHICH DID NOT EMPHASIZE THE 12 VARIABLES. PRE-TRAINING AND POST-TRAINING TESTS WERE GIVEN TO MEASURE THE LEVEL OF MOTIVATION AND WORK PERFORMANCE. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY DO NOT STRONGLY SUPPORT THE USEFULNESS OF ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION TRAINING WITH WOMEN PRISONERS.
