EDUCATIONAL ISSUES RELATED TO SOCIAL REHABILITATION PROGRAMS IN THE COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL SERVICE CONTEXT ARE EXPLORED.
Abstract
BECAUSE EDUCATIONAL ISSUES IN SOCIAL REHABILITATION ARE GROUNDED IN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE STIGMATIZED AND SOCIALLY DISADVANTAGED INDIVIDUAL, THE SAME DIMENSIONS APPLICABLE TO CRIMINAL OFFENDERS AND THE PROCESS OF REHABILITATION ARE ALSO APPLICABLE IN A MODIFIED FORM TO ALCOHOLICS, ADDICTS, MENTAL HEALTH CLINICS, DELINQUENT AND DEPENDENT YOUTH, AND OTHER MISCELLANEOUS CATEGORIES INVOLVING SOCIAL STIGMATIZATION. CRITICAL ISSUES IN THE CONCEPTUALIZATION AND CONTENT OF EDUCATION AND PUBLIC POLICIES REGARDING DEVIANT INDIVIDUALS ARE REHABILITATION VERSUS RETRIBUTION; REHABILITATION AS AN ART, SCIENCE, OR RELIGION; THE PHILOSOPHY OF REHABILITATIVE SERVICES; THE DEVELOPMENT AND AVAILABILITY OF A BODY OF FUNDAMENTAL KNOWLEDGE ABOUT REHABILITATION; EDUCATION IS STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE AND ACCREDITATION FOR COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL CENTERS; DEALING WITH CRITICS AND CRITIQUES; MODELS OF TREATMENT FOR CLIENT CARE IN COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL CENTERS; AND CORRECTIONAL/REHABILITATIVE EDUCATION. REGARDLESS OF SOCIAL DISABILITY CATEGORY OR STIGMATIZATION CLASSIFICATION, ALL CLIENT GROUPS NEED TO HAVE EDUCATIONAL ISSUES CLARIFIED WITH REGARD TO CERTAIN CONCERNS. THESE CONCERNS INCLUDE CLIENT HABITS AND HABITATS, PRESCRIPTION PACKAGES VERSUS PERSONALIZED PLANS, TRENDS IN TREATMENT, THE SELECTION OF TARGET POPULATIONS (SCREENING, ADMISSION, AND SELECTION), AND LEGITIMIZATION OF THE PLACE OF REHABILITATED PERSONS IN SOCIETY. CONCERNS RELATED TO PUBLIC AWARENESS, ACCEPTANCE, AND SUPPORT ARE CRUCIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL CENTERS AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE FIELD OF HUMAN SERVICES. PARAMOUNT COMMUNITY-RELATED ISSUES FOCUS ON PUBLIC EDUCATION, PROGRAM ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL FACILITIES, PRIVATE VERSUS PUBLIC PROGRAM OPERATION, PROGRAM EFFECTIVENESS AND ACCOUNTABILITY (EVALUATION, ASSESSMENT, AND RESEARCH). CENTRAL ISSUES RELEVANT TO THE WORK OF REHABILITATION SERVICE PRACTITIONERS AND PROFESSIONALS INVOLVE COMPETENCY, CERTIFICATION, MULTIDISCIPLINARY/MULTICULTURAL CONCERNS, AND GENERALIST/SPECIALIST CONCERNS.
