The relationship between inmate educational achievement and self-esteem, acceptance of others, and acceptability to others was studied in 118 inmates in an educational program at a maximum-security prison, the Lee Correctional Institution in Georgia.
Abstract
The responses were analyzed using factor analysis and correlation. Results indicated a significant positive relationship between self-esteem and years of schooling prior to incarceration. However, the results did not reveal a positive correlation between self-esteem, acceptance of others, and acceptance of self with current performance in the areas of reading, English, and mathematics in a prison educational program. Longitudinal research could better address questions regarding self-esteem and acceptance as they relate to education. Tables and 16 references
