This document presents a summary of the national evaluation of the Youth Justice Board’s 42 education, training, and employment projects initiated between 1999 and 2002.
Abstract
Young people who do not have an interest in, or access to, education, training, or fulfilling employment are more likely to engage in offending behavior. Between 1999 and 2002, the Youth Justice Board committed funding to 42 education, training, and employment projects for at-risk youth, many of whom have been excluded from traditional schools. The 42 projects fell into three broad categories: education, training, or work experience; physical activities; and school inclusion and career advice. The main components of the programs in each category are briefly described followed by the presentation of statistics regarding the juvenile clientele, such as information on their attendance rates, qualifications earned, and reconvictions. Recommendations for education, training, and employment projects are offered and include the observation that successful projects involved appropriate staff recruitment, training, and professional development.
