Case profiles of four programs funded by the United States Conference of Mayors are presented: a substance abuse treatment agency in Tucson, Arizona; a substance abuse and AIDS prevention agency serving Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics in Philadelphia; a community-based AIDS service organization in Miami; and an AIDS service organization in Long Beach, California.
Abstract
The profiles discuss agency background, program design, program goals and objectives, staffing, implementation, and program evaluation, as well as barriers experienced in accessing and serving clients. Lessons learned by the four organizations in serving HIV-infected intravenous drug users and women can help other organizations in their efforts to serve these target populations. The New Connections Program in Tucson includes HIV training for drug treatment counselors, case management services, and counseling services. Congreso de Latinos Unidos in Philadelphia focuses on risk reduction, active drug user recruitment, and service linkages. Health Crisis Network in Miami targets HIV- infected women through its outstation program, family health center, and case management services. The Long Beach AIDS Network offers training for professionals serving women at risk and direct services for HIV-infected women and attempts to sensitize the community to the needs of HIV-infected women.
