This study was designed to reveal the unique characteristics that gang member students take to the school environment, with special focus on the ethnic qualities so prominent in East Los Angeles. A projected goal of the research was to establish a program for the gang students and to promote the educational program for all students and teachers.
Abstract
At the time of the study, answers to the following questions provided a profile of gang member characteristics: (1) physical, educational, economic and social characteristics; (2) health, emotional and attitudinal characteristics of Chicano gang members; (3) family structure; (4) goals and incentives; (5) the effect of gang members on nonaffiliated classmates; (6) the effect on teachers of gang members in the classroom; (7) the commonalities of gang members and nongang students. The paper includes community background information, and an investigation of literature on juvenile gangs and on the education of Chicano students. Tables, bibliography, appendixes
