YOUTH AUTHORITY ARRANGED IN 1971 FOR PAROLE AGENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN LIVE IN PROGRAM IN EAST LOS ANGELES AREA KNOWN AS THE MARA VILLAGE PROJECTS.
Abstract
EACH OF THE PARTICIPANTS WAS TO LIVE FOR FIVE DAYS WITH A FAMILY OF THIS AREA. WE WERE TO TAKE AN ABSOLUTE MINIMUM OF CLOTHING, MONEY, ETC., AND WERE GIVEN 10 DOLLARS TO BUY TWO MEALS PER DAY DURING OUR STAY. THE FAMILIES WITH WHOM WE WERE TO LIVE HAD BEEN PAID TO PROVIDE LIVING QUARTERS AND ONE MAIN MEAL EACH DAY. THE GENERAL INTENT WAS TO FACILITATE EXPOSURE AND SENSITIVITY TO THE PEOPLE, CONDITIONS, AND PROBLEMS, OF THE EAST L.A. AREA. WE WERE TOLD TO FIND OUT WHAT IT IS LIKE TO HAVE TO MAKE MONEY STRETCH BEYOND WHAT MOST OF US HAD EVER EXPERIENCED, AND TO BE AWARE OF OUR FEELINGS REGARDING ALMOST TOTAL UNFAMILIARITY WITH THE SOCIETAL STRUCTURE.
