THIS ARTICLE REVIEWS THE CAUSES OF DYSLEXIA (A LEARNING DISABILITY INVOLVING DIFFICULTY IN LEARNING TO READ), DISCUSSES THE RELATIONSHIP OF DYSLEXIA AND JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, AND OUTLINES A DYSLEXIA SCREENING TEST.
Abstract
IT WAS FOUND THAT OF SOME 350 JUVENILE DELINQUENTS EXAMINED IN MASSACHUSETTS, BARELY FIVE PERCENT HAD SATISFACTORY SCHOOL RECORDS. THE AUTHOR NOTES THAT SERIOUS SCHOOL FAILURE WITH ITS ACCOMPANYING FRUSTRATION AND DESPAIR MAY INDUCE YOUNGSTERS TO DRIFT INTO CRIME. SCREENING TESTS MAY HELP TO PICK OUT THE DYSLEXIC CHILD, WHO CAN BE HELPED BY SPECIAL TEACHING METHODS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
