Annotation

The Australian Bureau of Criminal Intelligence (ABCI) was created in 1981 to provide facilities for the collection, collation, analysis, and dissemination of criminal intelligence to enable Australian law enforcement agencies to combat organized crime, specifically illicit drug trafficking.

Abstract

Intelligence interests of the bureau include drug trafficking, illicit gambling, corporate fraud, international money laundering, corruption of public officials, usury, and prostitution within an organized crime context. Over the years, local Commissioners of Police have sought close alliances with the bureau, including initiatives to assist in operational, tactical, strategic planning, and policy development. The Australian Criminal Intelligence Database (ACID) is a highly manipulative, relational database that allows the ABCI and associated law enforcement agencies to store collected intelligence data to aid in the recognition of emerging criminal trends and the identification of criminals.
