A 1989 U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing focused on drug trafficking, other drug law offenses, and drug-related violent crime in public housing projects and possible strategies for addressing these problems.
Abstract
Speakers included Federal and urban housing officials, representatives of advocacy groups, and residents of public housing projects. They noted that many public housing projects have become centers for drug distribution, although most of their residents are law-abiding citizens. As a result, their lives are frequently disrupted by the drug dealing and associated crime. Many are afraid to go outside their homes. In addition, local police lack the resources to keep the projects free of drug-related crime. Speakers asked for improved security, evictions of residents involved in criminal activity or harboring criminals, and other measures. Appended memoranda, letters, news articles, and related materials and prepared statements of speakers
