This report describes the Federal regulatory requirements for controlled drugs; the penalties for use and trafficking; the nature, sources, physiological and behavioral effects, and use of narcotics, depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, cannabis, and steroids; and related topics such as clandestine laboratories and the relationship between drug abuse and AIDS.
Abstract
An overview of the Controlled Substances Act explains each of the five schedules, international treaty obligations, specific regulatory requirements, and the penalties for use or sales of specific categories of drugs. Discussions of each drug category and specific drug detail the nature, sources, and effects of narcotics of natural origin, semi-synthetic narcotics, synthetic narcotics, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, amphetamines, peyote, LSD, PCP, marijuana, hashish, and anabolic steroids. Additional sections focus on clandestine drug laboratories, inhalants, drug abuse and AIDS. Color photographs of each drug and the pills or containers in which it commonly occurs, list of addresses and telephone numbers of State drug prevention and treatment coordinators, addresses and telephone numbers of Drug Enforcement Administration division offices, and lists of National Guard counterdrug coordinators and drug demand reduction administrators
