Abstract
THE STUDY INTENDS TO PROVIDE DATA THAT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO A KNOWLEDGE OF THE SCOPE OF THE EXPERIENCE AND USAGE OF A BROAD SPECTRUM OF DRUGS AMONG ADOLESCENTS AND ADULTS. MAJOR AREAS TREATED IN THE DISCUSSION OF RESEARCH PROCEDURE ARE THE SAMPLE DESIGN, INTERVIEWER TRAINING, INTERVIEWING EXPERIENCE, AND ANALYSIS. DATA WERE GATHERED BY MEANS OF A NATIONWIDE PROBABILITY SAMPLE DESIGN TO REACH ADULTS AGE 18 AND OLDER, AND YOUNG PEOPLE AGE 12-17. FIVE DIFFERENT DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS WERE USED, WHICH INCLUDED AN INTERVIEW FORM FOR PERSONAL INTERVIEWS WITH ADULTS, AN INTERVIEW FORM FOR USE WITH YOUTH, AND THREE DIFFERENT SELF-ADMINISTERED QUESTIONNAIRES ON CIGARETTE AND ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONSUMPTION, MARIJUANA USAGE, AND EXPERIENCE AND USAGE FOR HEROIN, LSD, COCAINE, AND INHALANTS. THE THREE QUESTIONNAIRES WERE IDENTICAL FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH. DATA ON THE INTERVIEWING PROCESS AND THE PROCEDURE FOR ANALYSIS ARE INCLUDED. ESSENTIALS OF THE INTERVIEWER TRAINING PROGRAM ARE PRESENTED, AND EXHIBITS OF MATERIAL OTHER DOCUMENTS IN THIS SERIES ARE NCJ-17342, 17339 AND 17389.
