Funding sources and amounts provided from the Federal, State, and local governments and the private sector for drug prevention and drug treatment programs are summarized, based on information from government records and the Foundation Center.
Abstract
Results revealed that public and private sources contribute several billion dollars annually to drug treatment and prevention programs; a large portion goes to treatment services. However, this estimate probably understates the total amounts because these entities do not report their total funding of treatment and prevention activities. Federal funding increased from $2.8 billion to $4.4 billion between 1990 and 1994. The Departments of Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, and Education accounted for about 83 percent of this amount. Combined State, county, and local expenditures increased from about $1.3 billion to about $1.6 billion. Available sources indicate private funding of more than $1 billion in 1993. Programs cover a broad range of treatment and prevention services and often target specific populations. Figures, table, footnotes, and appended tables and background information
