DISCUSSION OF ALCOHOLISM AMONG POLICE, THE SYMPTOMS OF ALCOHOLISM, CHARACTERISTICS OF ALCOHOLICS, AND PROGRAM APPROACHES FOR DEALING WITH THE ALCOHOLIC POLICE OFFICER.
Abstract
IT IS EMPHASIZED THAT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL POLICE AGENCY AND ITS ADMINISTRATORS IS TO RECOGNIZE AND ACCEPT THE FACT OF ALCOHOLISM AS A DISEASE AND TO CREATE A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE AND AN IN-HOUSE PROGRAM FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF INFORMATION RELATIVE TO THIS PROBLEM. THE OBJECTIVE OF SUCH A PROGRAM WOULD BE TO ULTIMATELY PERSUADE INDIVIDUAL OFFICERS TO ENTER A 'CARE' (COMPREHENSIVE ALCOHOLIC REHABILITATION ENVIRONMENT) UNIT FOR TREATMENT. HIGHLIGHTED IS THE DENVER POLICE DEPARTMENT IN-HOUSE PROGRAM WHICH OPERATES IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MERCY HOSPITAL CARE UNIT, A 21-DAY ALCOHOLIC REHABILITATION PROGRAM FEATURING COMPREHENSIVE, INDIVIDUAL THERAPY.
