THE TREATMENT OF MALE DELINQUENT ADOLESCENTS IN A PSYCHIATRIC CLINIC IN THE NETHERLANDS IS DESCRIBED BY THREE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS WHO WORKED AT THE CLINIC.
Abstract
AN INVESTIGATION IS CONDUCTED INTO THE TREATMENT OF MOSTLY DELINQUENT MALE ADOLESCENTS IN 'ZANDWYK', A PSYCHIATRIC CLINIC IN AMERSFOORT, THE NETHERLANDS. THE DISCUSSION CENTERS AROUND THE PERSONAL EXPERIENCES OF THE THREE AUTHORS, ALL MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS EMPLOYED BY THE HOSPITAL. THEY DESCRIBE THE SPECIFIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PATIENTS SUCH AS DEPRESSION, A DESIRE TO BE TOUGH, THRILL SEEKING, AND THE LACK OF SELF-CONTROL. THEY DISCUSS THE ADOLESCENTS' CONTACT WITH THE STAFF ON ENTERING THE HOSPITAL AND THE ATTITUDE OF THE PATIENTS AND THEIR PARENTS TOWARDS HOSPITALIZATION. THE CLINIC USES THREE TREATMENT METHODS: (1) INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOTHERAPY, (2) GROUP THERAPY, (3) FAMILY THERAPY. THE GOALS OF THESE TREATMENT METHODS AND THE WAY THEY ARE BALANCED AND ADAPTED TO THE PROBLEMS OF THIS SPECIFIC AGE GROUP ARE ANALYZED, AND THE INTEGRATION OF THE TREATMENT PROGRAM INTO THE ORGANIZATION OF THE HOSPITAL IS ILLUSTRATED. A SELECTED BIBLIOGRAPHY IS PROVIDED. --IN DUTCH. (WVK)
