Abstract
The law would provide for Federal support and stimulation of State, local, and community activities to prevent domestic violence and to provide immediate shelter and other assistance for victims of domestic violence. It would also provide for the coordination of Federal programs and activities pertaining to domestic violence. The speakers focused on the nature and extent of the problem of domestic violence, existing efforts and services to deal with it, and additional programs. Speakers included members of the House of Representatives, hospital personnel, criminal justice personnel, social services personnel, and leaders of advocacy groups. Additional printed documents provided included a police guide for responding to domestic violence, a list of programs and organizations supported by Levi Strauss Foundation and community involvement teams, a pamphlet from the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, a Massachusetts law, and comments from police officers following a crisis intervention seminar held in Pennsylvania. Appendixes present reports and statements from a variety of governmental and nongovernmental agencies and additional articles and resource materials.
