This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of domestic violence.
Abstract
In 1998, one-third of all murdered females were killed by an intimate partner. During 1998, women were the victims of intimate partner violence about five times more often than males. Of women who reported being raped and/or physically assaulted since the age of 18, three-quarters were victimized by a current or former husband, cohabiting partner, date, or boyfriend. About 10 percent of all handgun purchase applications were rejected in 1998 because the applicant had been convicted of a domestic violence offense, and 3 percent were rejected because the applicant was the subject of a domestic violence protection order. The chapter details numerous research studies and findings from state and local domestic violence programs and reviews case experiences of advocates who work with victims and batterers. It also examines protocols and policies for criminal justice system, as well as legal and coordinated community-based interventions, along with summaries of Federal and State laws relevant to domestic violence prevention and interventions. The chapter considers aspects of the physical, psychological, and financial impact of domestic violence on its victims and on children who witness violence. References, appendixes
