These Senate hearings were convened to discuss issues related to domestic violence and spouse abuse.
Abstract
The witnesses focused on the question of what role, if any, the Federal Government should assume in establishing programs to help victims of domestic violence and to prevent or reduce the incidence of domestic abuse. Many studies have indicated the widespread prevalence of domestic violence incidents, and the relationship between ongoing abuse and spouse murder. A key role for the government to play in this arena is to serve as a catalyst for actions by State, local, and private nonprofit groups. Witnesses included politicians and government officials, victims of domestic abuse, professionals working with social services agencies and battered women's shelters, advocates from other types of nongovernmental organizations, and researchers and academics expert on the issue of domestic abuse.
