This report presents statistics regarding domestic assaults in Wisconsin for 1990 and 1991, as well as data regarding arrests and prosecutions for domestic abuse, homicides from domestic assault, and offender and victim characteristics.
Abstract
The information came from official records of local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors. Most of the counties used a State reporting form; however, Milwaukee, Walworth, and Waukesha counties provided less detailed information. Results revealed that nearly 28,000 incidents of domestic assault were reported in 69 counties in 1990; more than 24,000 incidents were reported in 70 counties in 1991. Seventy domestic homicides took place in 1990; 60 took place in 1991. These homicides accounted for approximately 30 percent of all homicides in the State in 1990 and 24 percent in 1991. A total of 12,841 persons were arrested for domestic assault in the counties other than Milwaukee, Walworth, and Waukesha in 1991, with arrests occurring in 84.8 percent of the incidents. Arrests of two or more persons in the same incident increased from 6.1 percent of incidents in 1990 to 7.7 percent in 1991. Prosecutions occurred in 62.5 percent of the arrests. Approximately 82 percent of the offenders were male, and 80 percent of the victims were female. Approximately 45 percent of the incidents in both years involved victims and offenders who were both between ages 20 and 29. Tables and appended tables and text of State law
