A 1990 conference sponsored by the American Institute of Architects Committee on Architecture for Justice brought architects, officials of State and Federal corrections agencies, and planners together to discuss the current and future needs of correctional systems and strategies for increasing the cost-effectiveness of correctional facilities.
Abstract
Speakers focused on the recent and projected increase in the inmate population, fiscal constraints, and the increasing politicization of the correctional system and its impacts on correctional facility planning. They also emphasized the need for architects to work closely with corrections professionals, discussed the nature and operation of direct-supervision facilities, and presented a case study of the administration and operation of the correctional institutions in Wayne County (Mich.) and Lake County (Ill.). The conference also focused on technological advances related to contraband detection, access control, drug screening, and literacy tutoring. Figures and diagrams
