This article discusses documentation of latent print comparisons.
Abstract
In order to ensure the highest standards and to most efficiently and thoroughly document latent fingerprint comparison results, the Orange County (California) Sheriff’s Forensic Science Services Division has adopted a policy outlining the procedures, note taking, handling of fingerprint evidence, comparison of latent print impressions and reporting of results. The policy describes procedures relative to: (1) latent print lift cards; (2) photographs of latent detail; (3) latent jackets; (4) documentation of analysis results; (5) abbreviations used on case notes; and (6) comparison case notes. Although sometimes tedious and always time consuming, this type of documentation is essential to thorough and complete casework. Pre-trial conferences with attorneys are more streamlined as a result of thorough documentation and when the case goes to trial, the vital information needed for testimony is clearly presented and well organized.
