This article refutes an earlier commentary by Neil Boyd (1995) on the subject of civilian gun ownership in Canada.
Abstract
The author argues that Boyd's paper rests upon several unsupported claims, revolving around his knowledge of Canadian homicide statistics, as well as evidence provided by this author regarding the use of firearms for self-protection. In that study, the author found, in a representative sample of the Canadian adult population, that 3.1 percent of respondents reported that someone in their household used a firearm at least once during the past five years in self-protection either against animals or persons. These results were consistent with several other studies, cited in this article. 16 references
