THIS VOLUME PRESENTS PROCEEDINGS OF A MULTIDISCIPLINARY SEMINAR ON DIVERSION OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS; THE SEMINAR WAS HELD IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, IN SEPTEMBER 1976.
Abstract
THE SEMINAR FOCUSED ON DEFINITIONS, OBJECTIVES, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF DIVERSIONARY PROGRAMS FOR JUVENILES, ESPECIALLY IN CANADA, GREAT BRITAIN, AND THE U.S. SPEAKERS INCLUDED CRIMINOLOGISTS, LAW PROFESSORS, PROSECUTORS, A PROBATION OFFICER, A JUDGE, AND A PSYCHIATRIST. SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED LAWYERS, SOCIAL WORKERS, POLICE, CORRECTIONAL OFFICIALS, STUDENTS, PROBATION OFFICERS, AND YOUTH WORKERS. AMONG TOPICS ADDRESSED WERE (1) INCORRECT ASSUMPTIONS UNDERLYING THE CURRENT CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, (2) THE PROSECUTOR'S ROLE IN JUVENILE DIVERSION, (3) THE JUDGE'S ROLE, (4) PSYCHIATRIC ASPECTS OF DIVERSION, (5) BRITISH APPROACHES TO DIVERSION INCLUDING CAUTIONING, JUVENILE BUREAUS, FOSTERING, INTERMEDIATE TREATMENT, AND DEFERRED SENTENCES, AND (6) DIVERSIONARY PROGRAMS IN OTHER COUNTRIES. BOTH FORMAL PRESENTATIONS, DIALOGUE AMONG PANELISTS, AND QUESTIONS FROM THE AUDIENCE AND THEIR ANSWERS ARE PRESENTED. ALSO INCLUDED ARE A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS AND APPENDIXES INCLUDING A REFERENCE LIST AND A DISCUSSION OF FAMILY THERAPY'S POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF FORENSIC CHILD PSYCHIATRY. (CFW)
