PROGRAM DESIGNED TO OFFER INSTRUCTION ON MANY EDUCATIONAL LEVELS TO INMATES AWAITING TRIAL IN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA JAIL.
Abstract
THE STUDY EXAMINES THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AND ITS ACTUAL AND POTENTIAL PARTICIPANTS. SEVERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MEN WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM SINCE ITS INCEPTION, ARE DESCRIBED ALONG WITH THOSE WHO MAKE UP THE MOST ELIGIBLE TRAINEE GROUP. SUGGESTIONS ARE MADE FOR A PROGRAM THAT COULD APPLY TO THE ENTIRE JAIL POPULATION. THESE INCLUDE AVAILABILITY OF THE NECESSARY RESOURCES AND PRESUPPOSE WIDER ACCEPTANCE OF THE PRINCIPLE THAT JAILS MUST PAY MORE ATTENTION TO THE PROBLEMS AND NEEDS OF THEIR INHABITANTS.
