The District of Columbia has enacted legislation that pertains to public access to information, procedures for denying access to public records, drug offenses, criminal rules of the D.C. Superior Court, police and fire department records, and the sealing of criminal and arrest records.
Abstract
Legislation stipulates that all persons are entitled to full and complete information about government affairs and that they have the right to inspect and copy public records, except where statutorily prohibited. Legislation also contains provisions on what kinds of information are public, drug offenses, and criminal rules of the D.C. Superior Court. Legislative provisions on police and fire department records require that such records records be maintained by the Metropolitan Police. Other legislative provisions focus on police participation in the National Crime Information System, criminal offenses, and the maintenance and sealing of arrest records.
