ACTUAL CASE STUDIES AND A POLARIZATION GAME DEMONSTRATE THE BASIC THEMES BEHIND DISSENT AND PROTEST AND PROVIDE IDEAS FOR STUDENT THOUGHT AND DISCUSSION.
Abstract
THE CASES ARE DESIGNED TO HELP STUDENTS (GRADES 7-12) DECIDE WHICH FORMS OF PROTEST ARE LEGITIMATE AND WHICH ARE NOT, AND TO WHAT EXTENT THE MAJORITY SHOULD TOLERATE DISSENT. THE TRIAL OF BILLY MITCHELL IS COVERED IN THE SECTION ENTITLED 'WHY TOLERATE DISSENT?', THE ACTIVITIES OF PHILIP BERRIGAN AND H. RAP BROWN ARE DISCUSSED IN RELATION TO THE LIMITS OF DISSENT, AND THE SECTION ON BREAKING THE LAW INCLUDES THE EXPERIENCE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING IN BIRMINGHAM. RALPH NADER IS USED AS AN EXAMPLE OF WORKING FROM WITHIN. THE CASES ARE INTERSPERSED WITH QUESTIONS ABOUT THE READER'S OWN IDEAS AND HIS ANALYSIS OF THE MATERIAL PRESENTED.
