Abstract
THESE ISSUES ARE INSEPARABLE. UNFORTUNATELY, SOCIAL ISSUES MUST USUALLY REACH A CLIMAX BEFORE THEY ARE REMEDIED THROUGH THE LEGAL SYSTEM. THE UNITED STATES HAS A VIOLENT LEGACY AND HERITAGE WHICH DIFFERENTIATE IT FROM OTHER SOCIETIES. THIS IS MANIFESTED IN OUR RELIANCE UPON GUNS TO SETTLE ARGUMENTS. WE MUST CREATE A PACIFIST TRADITION TO COUNTERRACT THIS LEGACY. ANOTHER ROOT CAUSE OF CRIME IS THE STIGMA ATTACHED TO POVERTY IN THIS COUNTRY. THERE ARE FEW POOR PEOPLE HERE IN COMPARISON TO OTHER COUNTRIES, AND THE POOR KNOW THEY ARE POWERLESS. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MUST INVOLVE PEOPLE IN LEARNING TO CONTROL THEIR OWN DESTINIES. OTHER TOPICS DISCUSSED INCLUDE THE THREAT OF TECHNOLOGY TO PRIVACY, PRIVACY AS AN END IN ITSELF, THE BURDEN ON THE POLICE OF HANDLING ALCOHOLIC OFFENDERS, AND THE LAW THAT MADE IT A FEDERAL CRIME TO CONSPIRE TO CROSS STATE LINES TO INCITE A RIOT....PO
