This article reviews how the ReliaGene DNA Forensic Laboratory in New Orleans, LA survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Abstract
The following points summarize ReliaGene’s experiences and lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina: (1) plan ahead; (2) be ready for anything; (3) make one's own luck; (4) learn from one's mistakes; (5) take care of one's employees; (6) be honest and in constant communication with one’s clients/agencies; and (7) persevere and be grateful. In 1995, 5 years after its inception, ReliaGene, the Forensic DNA Laboratory in New Orleans, moved to its current location in the Harahan/River Ridge suburb of New Orleans. In choosing this new location, a most important consideration was to find high ground. The location chosen was 7 feet above sea level. This decision proved essential for surviving Hurricane Katrina. In addition, computer server protection was accomplished by separation and redundancy. In addition to the local server, a set of servers, including backup of all data, e-mail, and Web servers were located in Atlanta, Georgia. Within the first week after the storm, an easily accessible list of employee contact information was prepared from the information garnered via email communication. Two weeks after the hurricane, as soon as utilities were fully restored, work was initially resumed. The most important lesson learned from ReliaGene’s experience is that communication is the key. Another important lesson was to apply for relief early and often and plan for the worst.
