This 1984 directory of criminal justice programs and policy research conducted by 42 State statistical analysis centers (SAC's) is intended to inform policymakers about major criminal justice issues being debated and analyzed in the States and to increase awareness of the work of the SAC's.
Abstract
An overview of SAC activities indicates that most of the activities are in four categories: (1) analyzing UCR data for crime reports, (2) analyzing the impact of legislative changes, (3) developing and maintaining information systems, and (4) conducting special studies and research. The number of SAC's involved in each of 27 criminal justice issues are listed. Prominent issues are highlighted in a narrative section; sentencing, juvenile justice, prison overcrowding, victims, and police. Issues noted as receiving increased attention by SAC's include domestic violence, pretrial release, and drunk driving. SAC activities are outlined by State. Each activity summary contains project title, a brief description, data sources used, date of completion, and the name and phone number of a contact person. The report also indexes SAC activities under the 27 issue areas. This enables the user to find the more complete description of activities in each issue area. The appendix lists the addresses of the SAC's and describes the work of the Criminal Justice Statistics Association. For related document, see NCJ 94450.
