THIS BOOK EXAMINES PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE CORRECTIONAL ISSUES IN TERMS OF THEORY AND PRACTICE AS A MEANS OF DETERMINING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CORRECTIONS AND THE INCIDENCE OF CRIME.
Abstract
THE BOOK IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE PARTS. THE FIRST TWO PARTS CREATE A CONTEXT FOR A DISCUSSION OF CORRECTIONS TODAY AND TOMORROW. PART ONE DEFINES THE SCOPE OF THE BOOK AND DISCUSSES THE LIMITS OF CORRECTIONS WHILE PART TWO ANALYZES PAST AND PRESENT CORRECTIONS. THE THIRD PART OF THE BOOK DISCUSSES AVAILABLE RESEARCH IN GENERAL TERMS, IDENTIFYING WHAT IS KNOWN AND NOT KNOWN ABOUT PREVAILING CORRECTIONAL IDEOLOGY, PRACTICE, AND REFORM MOVEMENTS. PART FOUR IDENTIFIES A SERIES OF PIVOTAL ISSUES AND LISTS LESS TIMELY ISSUES AND THOSE AMENABLE TO CONSIDERATION BY STATE PLANNING AGENCIES. THE FINAL PART PRESENTS THE AUTHOR'S VIEWS ON THE POLITICS OF ENACTING CHANGE IN THE CORRECTIONAL SYSTEM.
