Abstract
The first chapter outlines the measurement of crime and covers historical trends, types of offenses, area variation, and victim survey crime statistics. The section on victims discusses various victim characteristics including, inter alia, age, gender, and ethnic group. Offense and offender characteristics are analyzed followed by a discussion of police and court action in response to crime. Sentencing processes and factors are handled in a separate chapter. Subsequent sections cover prisons and parole, human resources, and expenditures and costs. The report also includes a list of contact points and main sources of information on criminal justice. 2 appendixes
