EXAMINATION OF THREE SLUM SUBCULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS AND THE MOTIVATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS THEY PROVIDE FOR SUCCESS IN AND ADAPTATION TO ADULT LIFE.
Abstract
THE SUBCULTURES DISCUSSED ARE THOSE WHICH PRODUCE CRIMINAL, CONFLICTIVE (VIOLENT), AND RETREATIST BEHAVIORS IN JUVENILES. THE ARTICLE SUGGESTS THAT, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER AN ADOLESCENT TENDS TO CRIMINAL OR CONFLICTIVE BEHAVIOR, LIMITATIONS ON LEGITIMATE AND ILLEGITIMATE OPPORTUNITY COMBINE TO PRODUCE INTENSE PRESSURES TOWARD RETREATIST BEHAVIOR IN WHICH INDIVIDUAL ABANDONS THE SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND CULTURAL GOALS.
