INVESTIGATION OF SUGAR INTAKE LEVEL OF INMATES IN THE MORRIS COUNTY, NEW JERSEY, JAIL TO DETERMINE WHETHER THEIR DIETS AGGREVATE HYPOGLYCEMIA (LOW BLOOD SUGAR).
Abstract
DIET QUESTIONNAIRES WERE DISTRIBUTED AMONG MALE INMATES AND MALE NON-INMATES (MALE PERSONNEL WORKING IN THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE AND IN THE MORRIS COUNTY COURTHOUSE). FROM THE QUESTIONNAIRES THE RESEARCHERS DETERMINED THE APPROXIMATE INTAKE OF SUGAR, CAFFEINE AND ALCOHOL, THE SPACING OF MEALS, AND THE TIME OF DAY THE SUBJECT FEELS BEST (OR WORST). THE RESULTS SHOW THAT INMATES CONSUME SIGNIFICANTLY MORE SUGAR THAN NON-INMATES. INMATES ALSO CONSUME MORE ALCOHOL AND CAFFEINE THAN NON-INMATES. THE SURVEY ALSO CONFIRMED THE EXPECTATION THAT INMATES ATE MORE SNACKS THAN NON-INMATES AND THAT INMATES FELT BEST IN THE LATTER PART OF THE DAY. THE DIETS OF THE INMATES WOULD AGGREVATE LOW BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS AND MIGHT BE A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IN THEIR DISTURBED BEHAVIOR.
