Abstract
THE EDITORS FIRST PROVIDE AN INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL DEVIANCE, DISCUSSING SUCH TOPICS AS SOCIAL NORMS, SOURCES OF DEVIANCE DEFINITIONS, THE FUNCTIONS OF DEVIANCE, AND NONSOCIOLOGICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL EXPLANATIONS OF DEVIANCE. THE SPECIFIC NATURE OF DEVIANCE IS THEN EXPLORED - FROM DEVIANT ACTIONS TO DEVIANT ATTRIBUTES AND DEVIANT BELIEFS. THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL REACTIONS TO DEVIANCE IS DISCUSSED, AND THE RANGE, FORM, AND SOURCES OF SOCIAL RESPONSE TO DEVIANT BEHAVIOR ARE EXAMINED. IN THE FINAL SELECTIONS, THE PROCESSUAL NATURE OF DEVIANCE IS EXPLORED. THE INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ACTOR, ACTION, OBSERVER, AND RESPONSE ARE THE CENTRAL FOCUS OF THESE SELECTIONS.
