Fundraising has become a central activity of most colleges and universities in the U.S., and the development officer has become an increasingly important figure in the administration of institutions of higher education.
Abstract
Major authors in the field have advocated four primary development officer roles, including that of the salesman, catalyst, manager, and leader. This report proposes a development officer paradigm which depicts the relationships among these four roles. The model includes two vectors, one describing internal and one describing external development functions. The paradigm allows for integration of the literature, analysis of staffing needs for a development office, planning progression of an individual development career, and consideration of the major questions facing the development field.
