This research was designed to determine whether the Minnesota Multi-Phasic Personality Inventory could be used to generate reliable groups of youthful offenders. This study used MMPI profiles from 300 youthful offenders who had been admitted to the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee, beginning in 1967; in a later phase of the study, data from 89 additional protocols were used.
Abstract
The research was conducted in four phases: drawing three samples of 100 protocols each and conducting statistical analyses to determine naturally occurring subgroups; matching subgroups from each sample and writing rules to describe the larger groups which resulted from the matching; drawing a new sample of 89 protocols and applying these rules to their classification; and studying the characteristics of the groups which emerged through the study and combining them into yet broader types which could serve as the basis for future research in this area. A matrix designed from two profile sorts made on the new sample of profiles was used to examine the similarities and differences between these groups in terms of psychological characteristics typical to each group. 1 table, 2 figures, and 39 references
