A curriculum is presented for a training workshop, the Victims and Witnesses in the Juvenile Justice System Development Program created for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. The workshop is designed to help victim assistance providers and juvenile justice agency representatives develop or improve specialized programs.
Abstract
The material contained in the curriculum is divided into five modules corresponding to steps in the program development process. At the end of the workshop, participants should be able to articulate a victim-witness assistance program that is consistent with the philosophy of the juvenile justice system, recognize successful program designs used in other jurisdictions, know how to conduct and use needs assessment, be familiar with program planning techniques, collect and analyze data and evaluate program processes and outcomes, analyze victim statutes, and find materials and forms necessary to develop local programs. The full-day workshop combines lectures, guided group participation, desk exercises, and group discussion. This student guide contains notes for each module, handouts, and a handbook describing components of model victim assistance programs.
