This article presents information on Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO), a nationally recognized leadership training course developed by the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police).
Abstract
In 2009, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) created the Center for Police Leadership and Training to focus on leadership training, research, and information dissemination for law enforcement. One of the programs run by the Center is the Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO), a nationally recognized leadership training course. In 2010, the LPO curriculum was updated and enhanced with new training materials that provide training that is practical, relevant, academically sound, research- and behavioral science-based, and affordable. This article provides information on the changes that have been made to the LPO program along with the program's content, structure, and delivery methods. Also discussed are various training and delivery models used by different departments. These models include: small agency training consortium, State police model and a focus on training at all levels in the organization, major city and large department models, POST and State chiefs association facilitate statewide participation, joint fire and police training programs, and public and private partnerships. The article also presents data on the impact of the LPO program along with a discussion of the IACP's future efforts to refine and expand the program. 2 notes
