RESPONSE BY PROFESSOR ISAAC ERLICH TO A CRITIQUE BY BOWERS AND PIERCE ON HIS STUDY OF THE DETERRENT EFFECTS OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ON THE MURDER RATE.
Abstract
ERLICH ARGUES THAT HIS TIME SERIES ANALYSIS OF MURDER WAS PART OF A STUDY ON THE MORE GENERAL ISSUE OF OFFENDERS' RESPONSIVENESS TO INCENTIVES AND SHOULD NOT BE EVALUATED AS AN ISOLATED EXPERIMENT. HE DISCUSSES THE MISREPRESENTATION OF STATISTICS IN HIS CRITICS' ANALYSIS AND NOTES THE ABSENCE OF VALID TESTS TO REJECT THE DETERENCE HYPOTHESIS. FOR THE BOWERS AND PIERCE CRITIQUE, SEE NCJ-32940.
