REPORT OF A MODIFICATION TO THE WELLS' SCREENING METHOD, RESULTING IN A MORE SENSITIVE PROCEDURE FOR EXTRACTING THE TRANQUILLIZER DRUG, DIAZEPAM, FROM POST-MORTEM BLOOD SAMPLES.
Abstract
THIS MODIFIED EXTRACTION METHOD WAS FOUND TO BE MORE SENSITIVE FOR DIAZEPAM THAN THE WELLS' METHOD AND MORE RAPID THAN THE ZINGALES' METHOD WHEN APPLIED TO EIGHT POST-MORTEM BLOOD SAMPLES WHICH HAD BEEN POSITIVE FOR DIAZEPAM. THE PROCEDURE SHOULD AID FORENSIC TOXICOLOGISTS IN ESTABLISHING THERAPEUTIC BLOOD LEVELS OF DIAZEPAM AND DETERMINING THE TOXICITY OF DIAZEPAM WHEN COMBINED IN THE BLOOD WITH OTHER DEPRESSANTS.
