This article describes how the Laboratory of the Government Chemist applies chemical analyses to drugs seized upon entry into the United Kingdom, thereby identifying their points of origin.
Abstract
Both field and laboratory analyses are used to examine illegal drugs. Customs officers are provided with field test kits, enabling them to identify the presence of certain controlled drugs by color. The Laboratory conducts forensic tests to determine the presence of opium, poppy straw, morphine, heroin, coca leaf, cocaine, amphetamines, LSD, barbiturates, and cannabis. Specific chemical and physical tests are described, along with characteristic test results identifying the country or region where the drugs originated. Procedures for undertaking the analyses of certain drugs are also detailed. 34 references. (Author abstract modified)
