THIS DOCTORAL STUDY WAS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE DATA ON ALL AVAILABLE DOCTORAL PROGRAMS DIRECTLY RELATED TO CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND ANALYZE THEM IN REGARD TO THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO EACH OTHER AND THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM.
Abstract
ITEMS CONSIDERED WERE STATED GOALS, THE ORIGIN OF THE PROGRAM WITHIN EACH INSTITUTION, OBJECTIVES OF THE DOCTORAL DEGREE, THE GENERAL COURSE OF STUDY, AND REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION AND COMPLETION OF THE DEGREE. NINE CRIMINAL JUSTICE DOCTORAL PROGRAMS (AT THE FOLLOWING UNIVERSITIES) ARE IDENTIFIED AND DESCRIBED: FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY, SAM HOUSTON STATE UNIVERSITY, THE STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT ALBANY, THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY, THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. TWO TYPES OF PROGRAMS WERE FOUND (THOSE AIMED PRIMARILY AT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE DISCIPLINE AND THOSE WHICH SEE CRIMINAL JUSTICE AS A SUB-DISCIPLINE WITHIN A BROADER SPECTRUM). A BIBLIOGRAPHY IS INCLUDED. APPENDED IS A LIST OF COURSES (WITH DESCRIPTIONS) AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE DOCTORAL PROGRAMS BY INSTITUTION, STATEBY-STATE TABULAR DATA ON THE NUMBER AND TYPE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT DEGREE PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN THE UNITED STATES AND OUTLYING AREAS, AND A SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE FOR DETERMINING A CORE PROGRAM OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES FOR THE PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL IN FOUR-YEAR COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
